Gwen's Training Journey with Handler Hailey at Kent State University
The Superhero Litter just celebrated their first birthday and completed their evaluations for Advanced Training, where they will learn tasks to become service dogs. One year ago, these seven pups were just getting started. Now they're navigating college campuses, busy restaurants, and all the unpredictability of everyday life like the future service dogs they're becoming.
A Day in the Life of a Hero
This time, we're following Gwen through a day in the life with her volunteer trainer, Hailey, a junior at Kent State University double majoring in Integrated Language Arts and Theatre Studies. Hailey has been training Gwen since August, and the two have settled into a routine that's equal parts productive and fun.
Morning
Gwen starts every day with a potty break, then breakfast. From there, she and Hailey head out for a morning walk down the main street near their apartment. On nicer days, they swap the sidewalk for a nearby trail.
On Campus
Gwen attends Hailey's classes and, by all accounts, is the best student in the room. She settles in, stays calm, and handles the rhythm of a busy college schedule without missing a beat. For a one-year-old pup, that kind of focus in a classroom full of distractions is no small feat.
Downtime
Between classes, Gwen and Hailey run errands or head home to recharge. Gwen has claimed a favorite chair in the living room with a great view of the window, and she takes full advantage of it. There's always time for toys, too. Hailey describes Gwen as playful and silly, and throughout the day she works to reinforce Gwen's basic commands to keep those skills sharp.
Evening
After dinner, the duo sometimes heads out to a restaurant for a socialization outing. Gwen sits calmly under the table and handles the noise and activity of a dining room like a pro. The day wraps up with one more walk before Gwen settles into her crate for the night.
Days like this one are what turn a puppy into a life-changing partner. Every walk, every classroom, every dinner out is another step towards Gwen’s future.
You can be part of their story, too! Your donation to 4 Paws for Ability directly supports the training, care, and placement of service dogs like the Superhero Litter. Together, we can help these pups grow into the heroes they're meant to be.
